Many called it the future of work but now it’s not working for them!
I am talking about Remote work, how this was once hailed as the future of work, but many pioneers are calling employees back to their offices. One of the very few good things that came out of the Pandemic was remote work.
Why I love remote work.
If you have successfully worked for the last two years remotely, you can work remotely forever.
Remote work broke geographical barriers and allowed people to work for companies across the globe and provided companies access to a much larger talent pool as well as offered better opportunities to employees.
Pre-pandemic, I used to waste 3 hrs due to a long commute. By the time I reached home, I was too tired to read a book or find time to upskill, and I would instead go to sleep and repeat the same. Also, one had to take an entire day’s leave even if one had a small chore to do, but now one’s time can be used more efficiently which is better in the long run.
Now, no traffic jams are getting to my desk at home, and my energy is spent being happy and productive. I can travel across the country and change my scenery whenever I want. I can work with mountains in the background or an ocean in the front.
Trust is key
Remote work is trust-based; if your managers are messaging or calling every second to check, there is no trust, and it is a part of a more significant issue and not a problem with remote work.
If your employees are not giving their 100% working remotely, it is part of a bigger problem and not an issue with remote work.
These things don’t change by calling an employee back to the office.
Conclusion
Sure, sometimes I do miss working with my colleagues in an office and socialising is much more of a conscious effort and doesn’t happen naturally, but this can be solved by having scheduled offsites. Everything else stacks up favourably towards this great work culture. I will forever be a remote work advocate.
